That Time We Went to Marrakesh

In the last week of October, we took a week long trip to Marrakesh. We went with a tour group from Scotland, so most of the folks that were there were visiting from Scotland or somewhere in England. I would like to apologize now, for wearing double plaid in front of my new Scottish friends. Though one of them was a flannel shirt worn for warmth. I will not apologize for that. My other light jacket was somewhere in the Lisbon airport, as it arrived the day after me.

This is not a post of vacation pics. Though they are pictures I took while on vacation. Sticking to the theme of artsy things we see during our travels across the ocean or across the street, here are some images that I think show the city's decorative side in one way or another.

these buckets of what we are pretty sure are potpourri, or the makings of potpourri. Each color gets its own home. maybe to be mixed by the person who is buying it? Maybe they hate the color purple. The actual color, not the movie. Or maybe they want certain colors to be more dominant. I am not sure. I did not ask, as then you make it seem like you are interested. And that felt like a misstep waiting to happen. So I took this photo when people weren't looking.

I love this cactus. Little round balls growing this way and that. In a field of tall cacti. Everyone giving this smaller one room. They are like bubbles you do not want to try to pop. So perfectly round (mostly). You think you want to pick one up and toss it to your friend. But they probably won't be your friend after that. Unless you both run a practical joke show of some sort.

This blue is so interesting. It is so vibrant, yet not glossy. It jumps out against whatever is in front of it. You can buy small cans of paint for this color. But that seems like a big risk with it not exploding in your luggage. Even if you put it in a ziploc bag or something. This vase looks so stately. From Wikipedia ... In 1924, the French artist Jacques Majorelle constructed his largest artwork, the Majorelle Garden in Marrakech, Morocco, and painted the garden walls, fountains, features and villa this very intense shade of blue, for which he trademarked the name Majorelle Blue.

If you want to see tiles, go to the palaces and such. Just look at this. Very complicated, well maintained, though there may have been a rope keeping us from getting closer? And above the tiles, the woodwork is just as ornate. One miscue with the chisel and you might have to start over! Did they have wood glue back in the day?

They don't make entrances like they used to. All that intricate design right against a large flat neutral background. The wood doors adding some interesting texture change. You sometimes hear or read that we shouldn't spend money on decorative street lights or other city-based things. But then you up living in a bland, boring, neighborhood where everything looks the same. And you wonder why you don't talk about how lovely the area is. But not Marrakesh. That place was full of pizazz. (jazz hands engaged)
